Depth consistency
The criterion of Devernay and Beardsley (2010): the main subject should appear on the screen plane with its natural proportions. The aim is to bring the roundness of the main subject to the chosen value.
ρ = b · V / (C · e) → b = ρ · e · C / V C = Zs
where: Zs the distance of the main subject, V viewing distance, e interocular distance
With ρ = 1 the condition becomes b / C = e / V: the ratio of the interaxial to the convergence distance equals the ratio of the interocular distance to the viewing distance. The main subject appears on the screen with depth in proportion to its own width.
Properties
- The interaxial depends on the viewing distance, not on the screen width.
- The method preserves only the shape of the main subject; it does not control the depth range of the scene or divergence. In scenes with a distant background the window can be exceeded.
- The target roundness can be changed in the calculator; values below 1 reduce depth.
